The Day of the Dead

Publication Design | Student Work

The Day of the Dead is a very special Mexican tradition where we celebrate life while merging two different ideologies; the past and the present, prehispanic culture, and catholicism.
Everything about this tradition has a purpose and it only takes a bit of interest to find out the hidden meaning of things. In this book, I focus on explaining the symbolism of the different aspects found in this tradition. Through the use of had-made die cuts, illustrations, and extensive research I seek to illustrate how special this tradition is and how ingrained it is in our culture.

Book Cover

The image is inspired by "La Catrina" with a more realistic look similar to how people dress up on The Day of the Dead.
I painted this digitally in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet.

Illustrations

Original black and white illustrations were done by the acclaimed illustrator Posada.
I altered them by adding color to make them go with the aesthetic of my book. Each of these images were used as chapter openers thought the book.

Process Work

The book follows a two-column layout with page numbers in the bottom corners with the chapter title. Image captions are on the opposite side of the spine.
