Fournier Type Specimen
Editorial Design | Student Work
The Fournier Type specimen book explores the different qualities that Fournier has such as the Rococo ornaments and elegant curves. The typeface is based on St Augustin Ordinaire created by Pierre-Simon Fournier in 1742; later on, adapted by Monotype in 1925.
The transitional, almost modern character with distinct French flavor was very popular at its time and revolutionized the point system that now is very commonly used. The typeface's elegance is captured by the gold foil and emblem on the outside of the package. The typeface was made during the typesetting era so I wanted to help the user understand the process that Pierre-Simon Fournier went through to make each letter possible. I have incorporated 3-D printings of the different stages that creating a letter required to show the combination of a beautiful “transitional” style letter form with the modernity of today.

Ornaments
Using the original ornaments that Pierre-Simon made, I created new ones that were used in every opening chapter and throughout the book. The new versions would not have been possible to make at that point in time, but, now thanks to technology, we can re-purpose the original ones. The font's glyphs were used to make my own ornaments.
